Records and Files of the Quarterly Courts of Essex County, Massachusetts, from 1636 to 1686 are available online. You'll also find sections of the records in various publications like Essex Antiquarian and New England Historical and Genealogical Register. When the Peabody Essex Museum closed the Phillips Library for renovations and later removal of entire collection to Rowley, Massachusetts, the state stopped using PEM as a repository for Essex county court records. These records are now at the Massachusetts Archives at Columbia Point, as part of the Judicial records section. You will need special permission to view the original documents. However, thanks to FamilySearch, the court records are online. (They are not database searchable yet.)
Essex Quarterly Court and other courts, links to book versions: http://genealogyink.blogspot.com/2020/01/massachusetts-bay-court-records.html
Essex county, Massachusetts Bay record images: https://www.familysearch.org/records/images/search-results?place=395425
Suffolk County (Mass.) court files, 1629-1797: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/240378?availability=Family%20History%20Library (click on camera icon on right to view digital versions)
Massachusetts court records: https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/results?count=20&query=%2Bsubject_id%3A451484

Massachusetts Archives: https://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcidx.htm
Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court Archives: https://www.mass.gov/info-details/learn-about-the-court-archives
PEM's Phillips Library https://www.pem.org/visit/library
Robin Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17154533013093761313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-898169797604279846.post-40879336829497037032020-03-15T13:57:55.735-04:002020-03-15T13:57:55.735-04:00Robin, I hope you get this, I was at PEM just befo...Robin, I hope you get this, I was at PEM just before it closed in late 1990s. I was able to look at the original documents from Essex Quarterly courts after the published books, 1690's I think. I was surprised to see documents that were unimportant to publish but great for family historians. I wanted to go back but then they closed. Do you know current location and status of Essex quarterly courts? Your Phillips library timeline is great but stops in 2018. Thanks. I recently started scanning information that would help people in their genealogy research (weddings, obits, etc). I also post random things that people might like, sometimes just fun pictures from the past. I try to put names in the body of the post so the search engines will pick them up if someone is doing a search. I hope it helps someone, provides some missing information, or someone finds a fun picture of a relative that they didn't know existed. https://art2encourage.blogspot.com/juliannehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15210590284577060640noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-898169797604279846.post-36553624584129135072016-07-28T08:49:14.291-04:002016-07-28T08:49:14.291-04:00Even though there are many missing papers from the...Even though there are many missing papers from the 1692-1693 court, in some cases we can use what remains to piece together the families for genealogy. After Ancestry made the threshold for matches much higher, she didn't show up in my results of all. Follow the red painted line on the sidewalk and you'll see a slice of Salem, from the House of Seven Gables to the Haunted Neighborhood. I've written a bunch of articles about Salem and the witch hunt, so if you're interested, click on the "witch-hunt" keyword on the right to read more. I've also written about the tourist attractions there. I must admit I have not been to Count Orlok's Nightmare Gallery or the 1819 Custom House where Hawthorne worked, but I've been to all the witch-related museums. Tom the tour guide says the Salem Witch Museum at Washington Square is the best. I'd probably agree, though the Witch History Museum on Essex has better mannequins. But don't take all you hear at face value. You'll hear some myths and misconceptions that have been debunked with recent research and by reading the most complete set of witch trial documents published. Enjoy your trip! We go to Salem every year and never make it through my list of things to do, places to visit---all without repeats, except for the witch memorial. We pay our respects there every time we go. Salem is much more than the Witch City, of course, and I would recommend a visit to the 1630 Pioneer Village and to Jonathan Corwin's Witch House for the 17th century time frame. I enjoy just walking down Essex street or looking at the architecture, even the doorways of Salem.Robin Mhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17154533013093761313noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-898169797604279846.post-5497644738343446102015-10-15T17:01:56.103-04:002015-10-15T17:01:56.103-04:00Excellent choices and must-sees after the obvious ...Excellent choices and must-sees after the obvious sights.
Salem has so much to offer that you could do a top 25 list and be just starting to scratch the surface.
I love history and Salem sure has it.
Can't wait to visit again.

George Vreeland HillGeorge Vreeland Hillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11345695233540709947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-898169797604279846.post-3577191215645981192015-07-30T08:45:32.636-04:002015-07-30T08:45:32.636-04:00In July 2015, I visited Hannah (Hazen) Gibson'...In July 2015, I visited Hannah (Hazen) Gibson's grave and it's even harder to read than when I first found it in 2008, since the headstone is tilted forward and lower in the ground. It must have been serendipity that I first found it because this time I couldn't read the inscription without laying on the ground, and half of it remains buried. I am truly thankful to Kelly Thomas and the HBGI crew for unearthing the stone to read the inscription.
